Tough soybean harvest ahead for SE Minnesota farmer

A farmer in southeast Minnesota anticipates a difficult soybean harvest.

“There’s still a fair amount of green stem in there, and some green pods.”

That’s Ed McNamara of Goodhue telling Brownfield about his 1.6 maturity soybeans planted in June.

“I’m certainly looking at taking the time to get the combine adjusted, and definitely want to be watching for reel speed on the header to keep this thing from shelling and dropping a whole lot of soybeans on the ground.”

He says he’s only been able to take a few edge-of-field samples because the ground is too wet, but he hopes to be going full-speed by this weekend.

McNamara predicts his soybean yields will be about 10 percent lower than normal.
