Grassley is skeptical China will keep promises

Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley says he welcomes the partial trade deal with China, but wishes it was more comprehensive.

Grassley hopes it turns into a “full deal” down the road—but he says that won’t be an easy process.

“After decades of broken promises from the Chinese, this is an agreement that you can’t really have based on trust,” Grassley says. “While I remain hopeful, any comprehensive deal must have enforcement mechanisms—so that we know when they say they’re going to do something, it actually happens.”

Grassley says he’s very skeptical that the Chinese “are going to change overnight—unless it’s in China’s interest to do that”.

Grassley made his comments Tuesday in a conference call with ag reporters.
