MN farmer willing to push it to avoid still harvesting at Christmas

A southeast Minnesota farmer says he’d rather be harvesting corn with moisture in the high 20’s than still combining near Christmas.

Ryan Buck of Goodhue tells Brownfield rain has plagued the 2019 growing season.

“We are into some corn right now (and) it definitely is wet. But I guess it is October 14th, so it is time to kind of get started.”

Monday morning, Buck was harvesting 97-day corn planted the first part of May.

“It is 28 percent yet, and the yields are over 200. So we’re happy with the yields, but the moisture could be lower.”

Buck says they booked more LP than usual in anticipation of a wet harvest.

Minnesota did experience a hard freeze over the weekend.  Buck says that might be a blessing in his area because it might prevent widespread stalk rot.
