Capt. David Salazar of the Milwaukee Police Department speaks at a news conference Thursday night in the 2500 block of North 38th Street, where four people were shot, including two children. One adult victim died from injuries.

Bullets in a shooting Thursday evening in Milwaukee's Metcalfe Park neighborhood struck two adults and two children, killing one of the adults, police said.

Officers were driving near the scene about 5:30 p.m. in the 2500 block of North 38th Street when they heard a series of gunshots. As they arrived,  they saw the suspect shooting, Milwaukee Police Capt. David Salazar said at a news conference.

The officers chased the suspect for several blocks and arrested him, Salazar said.

A 38-year-old victim died and a 14-year-old was in grave condition, Salazar said. A 10-year-old and 26-year-old also were shot. He did not give their conditions.

All victims were in the street when they were shot, Salazar said.

Salazar would not say whether the victims were male or female. He also declined to say whether they were related or what led to the shooting, citing the early nature of the investigation.

Police were still on the scene about 7 p.m. and could be seen investigating a home in the 2500 block of North 38th, which police blocked at West Wright Street.

Salazar called the shooting "horrible" and said he had children around the ages of the victims.

"Doesn't matter where you live in this city or in this community, your children should be free of this type of violence," he said.
