Negotiator says partial China trade deal possible

Expectations for a comprehensive U.S. China trade deal are low as Chinese leaders arrive in Washington for talks Thursday and Friday, but there is a chance of progress.  A member of the Chinese delegation told Bloomberg China would accept a limited trade deal including purchases of U.S. agriculture products without agreeing on major sticking points if no more tariffs are imposed.

Those sticking points still include U.S. demands for protecting intellectual property and ending forced technology transfer.  Also, President Trump is reportedly considering a ban on U.S. investments in Chinese companies.  He recently blacklisted eight Chinese technology companies for China’s human rights violations against Muslim minorities. The State Department also placed visa restrictions on officials who are believed to be responsible for the detention or abuse of the minorities.

A ninth company, Huawei Technologies, was already banned from doing business in the U.S. for national security reasons.
