Heisman Watch: Alabama's Tua Tagovailoa moves closer to Oklahoma's Jalen Hurts

Jalen Hurts retains the lead in the weekly USA TODAY Network Heisman survey despite his Oklahoma team being off in Week 4. But some other contenders turned in big performances over the weekend, including one non-quarterback, and cut into his margin.

For now, Hurts still has 45 total points in the survey of official Heisman voters who work for USA TODAY Network properties. The senior was named first by 11 of the 20 panel participants.

Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa remains in second place followed by LSU QB Joe Burrow, both of whom were sharp in easy SEC road wins on Saturday. Tagovailoa cut an 18-point deficit in half to move with nine of Hurts. Burrow is now just 20 points behind.

Wisconsin running back Jonathan Taylor’s 203-yard rushing day against Michigan got the attention of voters as well. He’s now in fourth place with eight total points, including one first-place nod.

Three other quarterbacks, mentioned on one ballot apiece, round out the survey. They are Trevor Lawrence of Clemson, Justin Fields of Ohio State and Anthony Gordon of Washington State.
