September 18, 2019, CCAC meeting: Chinese American Veterans of World War II Congressional Gold Medal

Background photo by AgnosticPreachersKid.

On Wednesday, September 18, at 9:30 a.m. (EDT), the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC) held a meeting to review and discuss designs for the upcoming 2020 American Innovation $1 coins for Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maryland, and South Carolina in addition to the Congressional Gold Medals for the USS Indianapolis and Chinese American Veterans of World War II. Below are the various proposed designs for the obverse and reverse of the Chinese American Veterans of World War II Congressional Gold Medal. Let us know in the comments which design you would choose for each side!

While I appreciate everyone’s service, I don’t like these types of “identity recognition”. One of the important reasons we were successful in WWII was because we fought as a nation, not as Chinese, Italians, Blacks, etc. Everyone contributed to the victory as AMERICANS. Back then nobody wanted to be singled out like they do today. In fact today we would have a hard time fielding a military that size with all the crazy identity stuff going on. Back then it was the Melting Pot. Today it is individualism and identity which fragments rather than joins us.

  2. just another dave in pa says

I agree about identity pandering. It all inevitably leads to a Gays in the Military coin in the not-so-distant future. However,…….

CAV-R-02 is outstanding with a beautiful minimalist approach.

Others just put it on too thick although CAV-R-12 is also very nice.

CAV-O-12 is also outstanding but not CAV-O-13.

I don’t get the connection with the Battleship Missouri in many of the designs.

Humans are born with a fear of falling and loud noises. “No one is born a racist”(MLK?)! That is a taught behavior, learned at an early age. Well before recorded history, humans have always been in survival of the fittest, me first, quest for power and control. Even over ones own flesh and blood. So far we’ve come in the past 2000 years, however such a long, long way to go? Unless of course an asteroid and or climate change(yes it’s real!) LOL takes us there quicker? Of course the is the almighty unthinkable, which would consist of a scenario mentioned above? Hiroshima, Nagasaki all over again with different players. Never say never, as humans are pretty stupid/reckless, with some believing, advocating the that another devastating/annihilating WW is bound to happen, when, not if, so why not strike first? Boy, what it would be like to be a fly on a wall, during any one of a number of think tank groups regarding global affairs right now! 😮 WOW

  4. Jerome Diekmann says

Ben There – Amen! Are we going to have medals now for German Americans, Italian Americans, Polish Americans, Indian Americans, Japanese Americans, French Americans, Mexican Americans, Portuguese Americans, Greek Americans, Hungarian Americans, Armenian Americans, Irish Americans, Filipino Americans,ad infinitum? Like you have said, this nation is a melting pot, and men and women of every ethnicity and national background fought during WW II. If we are all Americans we only need to honor Americans, and not the ancestral home of these Americans. I can understand honoring native American code talkers and the Tuskegee airmen, but the rest of these medals are overdoing it, IMO.

  5. CaliSkier says

Ben and Mark, I’ve read the troops were actually segregated until 1948? Blacks kept away/not accepted per se into the ranks? Native Americans, Japanese, also kept isolated from whites and blacks? Meaning they had units or regiments of their own race within each branch of the military.

Ben says: “One of the important reasons we were successful in WWII was because we fought as a nation, not as Chinese, Italians, Blacks, etc. “‘ Yes a nation of segregated troops with nary a recognition/acknowledgement of each of these segregated troops/races. as if their sacrifices and successes were less than those of their white counterparts? BTW my bad, we Americans locked up all the Japanese here in America, in Internment camps!

Here is a link to a brief summary of contributions made by African Americans during WW II from the National WW II Museum as an example.

    https://www.nationalww2museum.org/sites/default/files/2017-07/african-americans.pdf

Although not quite as glaring as in the past, racism is alive and well here in America still! Amazing what one can learn from their family, friend, peers? Wouldn’t want to do the right thing and standout by going against the grain, however we have a choice to be ignorant or not.

I don’t know about the rest of you, however I don’t recall any of these gold medal recipient military units, such as the Tuskegee Airmen, 65th Infantry/Borinqueneers, Code Talkers, etc being talked about or covered during any(1980’s) of my history classes or books? So although I don’t buy medals, I do have an appreciation of the historical significance being represented! Actually, I think the Code Talker medals would be a series I’d buy if done in Ag!

America, the Melting pot, as long as it’s NIMBY!

The first design (CAV-O-01 ) looks too much like the American Legion 100th Anniversary Commemorative Half Dollar. I wonder if it’s the same designer.

  9. just another dave in pa says

It’s never really been a melting pot, though. The US consisted of religious and ethnic enclaves until the rise of mass media in the 50s and 60s which provided political and social stratification.

The reason we were never taught about the Tuskegee Airmen or Code Talkers or gender studies or Afro-American studies is because Identity was never a political issue until recently when Identity pandering came into vogue.

History has been re-written with an emphasis on race and gender (identity) issues. The pandering comes in the form of racial and ethnic pride campaigns and honors. Another way identity politics is enforced is through the control of language which is a pretty common theme. Is that allowed here? – is a typical assault on free expression.

Taking offense at language and words is a national pastime today. Kids are taught about trigger words today and they are made pliable through shaming and awards for politically correct behaviors. As children we were all taught that sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me…. but today that situation has been reversed and we’re all worse for it.

The Golden Rule should suffice and when it doesn’t then we must “forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us” and let go of our identity and accept ourselves as merely human.

    Nail in the coffin –

13 year USM buyer, of about EVERYTHING (2006 Buffalo @ $800 was my first purchase), NOW mostly a RM (Queen’s Beast & Sovereigns) & PM (Lunar & Swan’s) Au Ag BU & RCM Call of Wild Buyer…

Went to pick up my next Queen’s Beast 10 oz Falcon and White Lions (Au/Ag),.., & all my favorite ‘go to’s’ now charge sales tax.., APMEX, JMB, PROV, & eBay (Pinehurst)…, ALL
There’s a couple I’m hawking that do not, price is higher, so it’s a likely wash…

The sales tax factor will be the nail in the coffin for this hobby.., many of the old timers here have articulated very compelling rationale as to why the precipitous drop in collectors..,
I remember distinctly a post from Jerry D. a few months ago that succinctly captured the key points as to why the hobby is not as healthy as I would have thought going into 2020.., very well articulated, I wish I had saved it off as it hit all the key points you all have discussed…

Anyhoo.., as a long dedicated collector to my series.., the sales tax hit is making a big hit to ‘feeling good’ about buying great looking RM, RCM, & PM BU.

I am a collector that loves his PM art collection, but damn, here in VA, 6% add a lot to PMs!

    Oh well.., 1st World problems…,

FWIW – there’s a few Seeking Alpha contributors that argue that PD only goes higher from here.., I didn’t think that would ever be the case beyond $1,600, though now it seems quite possible, DYOR

    More Importanly..,

Harry B & Larry – per the previous thread, I truly appreciate you sharing your Father’s contribution to WWII, it took a lot to post that and their contribution is truly appreciated by their fellow veterans. They are the Greatest Generation, and you sharing their stories helps our understanding of significant events that made a significant difference that truly, wasn’t that long ago. I do tour WWII veteran’s around D.C. though your’re post remind me why I should do more…, so thanks. This blog, from 2008 to 2016, was filled with Veteran’s, not so much anymore therefore the few of us remaining, greatly appreciate you sharing their meaningful heroic duty.

While the Country seems very much divided, I firmly believe American’s unite around those that make a difference.., and that’s your Dad’s contribution to Freedom.

    Best Mates,

KC&SO…yeah…New York State is collecting 8 percent on every internet site inc. eBay…is going to reduce sales…I now have to figure any item I want is going to have the 8 percent added to the hammer price…adds up fast when your purchases start exceeding $50…

Quite a NEGATIVE # on the RP Pd item…… looks like w/o a spot fall the mint will be lucky to sell 15k of these. ONly 500k innovation $1, what a waste this program appears to be. KC is right on taxes, I know a few where I can escape them, but w/taxes kicking in for <$1,5oo in buys may need to just buy more….yeah that'$ the ticket!!

Jeepers Creepers where’d We get all these PeePeer’s? No wonder the hobby is going down the toilet ! So anyway on 9-11 10:43 I posted that they were rare enough that they might start faking them ? So I go on the bay today and there they all are !!! Dang all looking fake to Me and at $95 or $150 B.I.N or the auctions somebody let us know how those end up? But it’s sounding like chump change to Me !! Cause You’d have to be a chump to buy any of those!! If you want one that bad heck make your own. Looks like it is not that hard but you can fake the roll but not the coin not easy any way. So on to the rest of the story. Yesterday I go to the bank see my teller and ask does she have any extra of the new rolls? She goes yup so I ask how many can I get? So how many do you want? I dig in the pocket and I got a hundo I go. So back she comes with the ten rolls so after telling her how nice of her and all that slip them in the pockets and slip out. So after a quick parking lot check 5 are Heads & Tails 1 Tails & Tails and 4 Heads & Heads> After a little squinting and you know the infamous DW which I’m am told is also Arthurs little sister in cartoon land? So they are still out there but please don’t buy the fakes buyer beware they say but I Say Good Luck All”>”>”>”>OOOO

Maybe the big PM dealers could set up regional shops in the no tax states. People would travel from nearby states to avoid paying tax if it was worthwhile.

  25. MarkInFlorida says

I think sales tax is based on the state the buyer is in, so they seller can’t pick a state to be in to save tax. In Florida bullion is exempt from sales tax so sellers don’t have to collect it from us. Do any states require sales tax at coin shows? Once I set up at a (non-coin) show in another state and a state revenue guy came around wanting everyone to register to collect sales tax!

530,850 American Innovation Delaware $1 Sold Launch Week…

Based on the sales of the 2018 Innovation dollar, this is right around the expected range. I would expect total to be about 1 million, compared to around 5 million for the last of the presidential dollars and a little over 2 million for the NA dollars. Not sure that will be high enough to justify this program. Considering the number of modern coins under the 100K mintage, 1 million should be more than enough to go around.

Regarding the sales tax issue, eBay started charging me sales tax July 1st this year on all purchases, so I have purchased my last coin on eBay, I now purchase coins or bullion face to face at larger coin shows or other venues. eBay knows they have a problem, a person claiming to be an eBay help desk representative called me unsolicited, offered to code my account as a non profit or charity, and not charge me sales tax. I strongly declined, stating that to represent myself as such was fraud and investigators would come calling. The representative then invited me to call back if I needed any further help. I was spending $1k or so a month on gold thru eBay till then………I would like to purchase a 2019 Palladium offering, but now doubt I will ever own one. Those expecting a major drop in PMs in the short term may have unrealistic expectations.

  32. smalltimecollector says

A good read for anyone desiring info on Pd uses, price, and demand.
Interesting that only 2 to 11% of Pd demand comes from investment.
Essentially Pd is consumed by various industrial applications.
    https://seekingalpha.com/article/4243749-3-reasons-palladium-market-will-get-stronger
Put me in the column of those that feel price will maintain. If it does not, the expected(?) lower than limit sales of this very nice coin will maintain it’s collectibility. The PM folks may enjoy value maintained by the limited production.

  33. sharks2th says

The Bay can’t get their sales tax charges correct. For example, there are a few states which do not charge sales tax on coins and bullion of you purchase over $1k or $1.5k. The state I live in is in the all tax free if over $1k category for bullion and coins, yet the Bay still list and charges a tax only on the 1st $1k, which should be zero if the total purchase order exceeds $1k. I and a local dealer have contacted the Bay, but they still have not corrected this after 3 months of charging the sales tax. I missed a classic coin I was considering purchasing because the Bay could not correct the tax issue.

As KCSO points out, you are starting out down 6,7,8% or more depending on the state in which you live. For a marginal hobby, this really impacts those who hope their collections will at least hold some value.

Additionally, the Bay is effectively charging sales tax for “yard sale” items if you buy used things like household items, sporting goods, etc. This may lead to more Craigslist or Offerup type shopping since you can meet the people and pay cash just like the old newspaper want ads. It will just be difficult to get items if you search across the country and are not near the item you are seeking or the seller won’t ship the item. I too have reduced my purchases on the Bay due to this. I wonder how much windfall some of these states are going to realize once the Bay and other large online sites send them the check? How are these states going to enforce proper and timely payment of their “due” taxes? Will some of these online businesses charge taxes and then just keep the money if they do not do a lot of business with customers in the state?

I did check on one of the big coin/bullion sellers by filling my cart and the tax did go away when I filled the cart to exceed $1k. I’ve also dealt with Heritage since the change and they have their tax charges correct.

  34. John Q. Coinage says

My last ebay purchase of a 5z ATB [USM P Colo Sand] @ 110$ was not taxed. It’s the sellers’ I think who decide to collect the tax. Ebay will supply the seller w/a 1099 report on all the $ they got, along with one to tie IR$. Maybe just a matter of time.

Move to Delaware? No tax benefit is not enough, nor is the punch that I can’t get here. Winters I would pass! I would go west to Hawaii…the weather is so damp the coins just develop a lovely toning, my old stamps for postage- moisten themselves before use even!
