Police & Fire: Apartment fire, armed robbery, domestic assault

APARTMENT FIRE: The cause of an apartment fire remains under investigation by Battle Creek Fire Marshal Quincy Jones. The fire at 244 Taft Court was reported at 12:50 p.m. Saturday. Battle Creek firefighters reported finding a small fire in the first floor bedroom at the River Oaks apartment complex. Firefighters said the blaze was confined to a bed and they also performed ventilation to remove the smoke. No injuries were reported.

DEATH INVESTIGATION: The Calhoun County Sheriff Department is investigating the death of a 45-year-old man found near his home Sunday in Springfield. Deputies were called at 1:48 p.m. and found him dead in a yard in the 300 block of Richfield Avenue near 21st Street. Detectives believe the man may have died from a medical condition but will await results of an autopsy. He has been identified but his name is not being released. ARMED ROBBERY: A man and woman were arrested after a Sunday morning robbery, Battle Creek police said. The robbery was reported about 8 a.m. at a home in the 100 block of Wa Wee Nork Drive. Police said the couple entered the home and assaulted three juveniles. One was taken to the hospital for treatment. The couple fled but were located at a home on West Fountain Street but would not come out when police arrived. Members of the Emergency Response Team were called and as they took positions at the house. The couple surrendered without incident. Charges are pending.

WARRANT FOR FIGHT: Battle Creek police are seeking arrest warrants for neighbors, a man, 48, and another, 35, after they fought in the first block of Seivour Avenue about 10 p.m. Friday. Officers said the younger man said he approached the older man after the older man was yelling at children on the sidewalk. The younger man said they confronted each other and he slapped a beer from the hands of the older man. They exchanged words and pushed and punched each other. The older man said he was on his phone when the younger man approached and pushed him and then he was hit in the face.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE: Battle Creek police have reported the following cases:

• A man, 34 was arrested after his former girlfriend, 49, said she was assaulted in the first block of Eldred Street at 2:14 a.m. Saturday.

• Officers are investigating after a woman, 39, said she was assaulted by her son, 19, in the 700 block of North Avenue at 4:41 p.m. Friday.

• Warrants are being sought for a male, 17, and his girlfriend, 16, after they fought in the 100 block of Pleasant Avenue at 11:24 a.m. Friday.

• A man, 28, was arrested after his children's mother, 27, said she was assaulted in the 500 block of Wagner Drive at 4:44 a.m. Friday.
