Growers are addressing climate change on their farms

Farmers are playing a major role in addressing climate change by implementing practices to improve sol health and sequester carbon.

Those regenerative agriculture practices include no-till, cover crops, livestock grazing, and crop diversity.

Chris Malone, head of field data solutions with Indigo, says farmers are looking at a decent return on investment.

“Conservatively $30 an acre essentially in additional profit for a grower, which for farmer economics that’s very material,” he says.

Jay Watson, sourcing sustainability engagement manager with General Mills, says more research is being done to show growers what will improve their bottom line.  

“Getting more of that data will I think will help legitimize the movement a little more,” he says. “We’d be able to take that information to producers who are interested but need to see more. So, I think bringing some more science and data to this regenerative concept is what’s needed.”  

Malone and Watson spoke about how growers can be both profitable and sustainable during a panel at the Forbes Ag Tech summit.
