ESPN's Ryan Clark flips out on Paul Finebaum for criticizing Cam Newton during 'Get Up'

Try and consume a morsel of sports media this week without eventually being subjected to a debate over Eli Manning's career accomplishments or whether Cam Newton is entering the twilight of his career.

It will prove to be quite the task, and ESPN managed to combine the two Wednesday morning on "Get Up."

"It is the end. It's over for Cam Newton," college football commentator Paul Finebaum said. "I don't know why we're mincing words. He's a train wreck right now. He can't do what he used to do. And quite frankly, forget the sympathy tour. Cam Newton hasn't really cared about anyone other than Cam Newton."

This opinion aggravated fellow panelist Ryan Clark, who wasted little time laying into the radio host by invoking his previous take of praising Manning, who has been benched for rookie Daniel Jones.

"This is my only statement to that," Clark said. "We just spoke glowingly — not we, Paul — about Eli Manning, and he has taken a dud for the last four years. You want to talk about bringing a franchise down? Eli has ruined that franchise. So we got to take out how we feel about dudes because he's a Manning, because we love him. ... If we look at it right now, Cam has more left than Eli has for years."

Outspoken debate drives the fodder for the ESPN morning show, but this demo contained heightened emotions. And Clark was visbily irked by Finebaum's stance, which he perceived as hypocritical.

"I could stay healthy if I learned how to throw the ball and do this," Clark said as he spun around and ducked in his chair.

"We got to stop treating dudes because they play a certain way or because they act a certain way that's not familiar to us, that that's not leadership."

Newton has thrown for 572 yards with no touchdowns and one interception this season for the 0-2 Panthers.
