National FFA reaches record student membership

The National FFA Organization has set record membership this year with more than 700,000 students, up by more than 30,000 from 2018.

Kristy Meyer with National FFA tells Brownfield there are several factors that are likely driving the increase.

“There is really an increase of interest in the careers in agriculture and the opportunities that exist in agriculture for our students and we are seeing that there is also an interest of where their food comes from. So, we think a combination of those two are driving the interest.”

Meyer says diversity of student membership is also growing with more than 100,000 Latino members. Females make up 45% of membership and hold more than half of the organization’s leadership positions.

There are FFA chapters in 24 of the 25 largest US cities. Texas, California, Georgia, Ohio and Missouri lead the nation with the highest membership. The organization now has 8600 chapters throughout the US, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
