China pushes for more pork production

China is pushing its provincial governments to stabilize hog production so that their pork supply in ensured in the face of its African swine fever outbreak. China’s State Council wants 95 percent of its pork supplied domestically by 2025.

USDA Chief Economist Rob Johansson says China is having a difficult time rebuilding its swine herd.

“But when they do they’re going to have to expand their swine production pretty rapidly to make up for a lot of lost production,” said Johansson, “how fast and how quickly that happens is anybody’s guess.”

China’s provincial governments are being asked to offer policies preferential to pork production, while banks are being asked for their support by extending loans for large-scale hog farms. The council’s statement also calls for timely payment of subsidies for mandatory culling due to African swine fever.

Meanwhile, the statement says China will promote science and technology in hog production and accelerate the use of farm waste.
