A South Mountain man led police on a high speed chase in a Volkswagen Beetle early Monday morning.

Billy Baker, 35, was charged with three felonies and multiple summary offenses as a result of an incident where he fled officers while driving under the influence, according to court documents.

Around 1:30 a.m. police responded to a report of an "erratic driver" on South Mountain Road in Quincy Township.

An officer in a marked patrol vehicle pursued the 2002 silver Beetle after he clocked the car driving over 85 mph in a 45 mph zone.

The state trooper activated his emergency lights and siren but the car continued to flee, reaching speeds in excess of 100 mph.

The pursuit continued off road into a wooded area when the driver, later identified as Baker, exited the vehicle and fled on foot.

The trooper apprehended Baker approximated 200 yards into the foot chase.

Several open cans of Bud Light beer were discovered in the front passenger compartment. Baker was described by the arresting officer to have "glassy, bloodshot eyes, slurred speech, and emanating a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage," according to court documents.

Baker told the officer multiple times he had been "drinking and smoking weed all day," but he refused to provide a blood sample to determine his blood alcohol concentration.

Whenever he is released from prison, Baker told the officer, he "will run again."

Baker was put in jail on $300,000 bail.

He is scheduled to appear in court before Magisterial District Judge Annie Gomez-Shockey for a preliminary hearing on Sept. 24.
