USDA expects smaller sorghum crop

The USDA has lowered expectations for the 2019 sorghum production. Production is pegged at 351.580 million bushels, down 1% from August and 4% below 2018’s total of 364.986 million, with a higher average yield canceled out by lower acreage projections. The average yield is currently projected at 74.3 bushels per acre, compared to 73.9 a month ago and 72.1 a year ago. Harvested area is expected to be 4.735 million acres, compared to 5.061 million last year.

The USDA’s new crop ending stocks estimate was also down on the month, declining 8 million from August to 46 million bushels. The USDA lowered 2018/19 ending stocks and production, leaving the demand side of the balance sheet unchanged. The average 2019/20 farm price is seen at $3.30 per bushel, steady with a month ago and potentially up $.05 from the previous marketing year. The 2019/20 marketing year for sorghum got underway September 1st.

The next set of supply, demand, and production estimates is out October 10th.
