Man, 27, victim of Chambersburg's first deadly crime of 2019

A man has been charged with first-degree murder following a shooting early Sunday morning in Chambersburg. 

Borough police responded at about 5:40 a.m. to the area of 232 Lincoln Way West for a report that shots had been fired. There they found the body of Edwin Perez-Huertas, 27, who had been shot multiple times, according to a police report. 

Upon further investigation, police identified a suspect, 32-year-old Brian Bonilla-Benitez. He was located at Motel 6, 1095 Wayne Ave., and taken into custody without incident. 

Police said this was an isolated incident. 

This was the first fatal crime of 2019 in the borough, police noted. 

An autopsy on the body of Perez-Huertas will be scheduled in the coming days. 

Bonilla-Benitez was taken to Franklin County Jail to await arraignment, police said. 

Several other agencies assisted with this incident, including Pennsylvania State Police Chambersburg Barracks, Pennsylvania State Police Special Emergency Response Team (SERT), the Franklin County Coroner's Office, the Franklin County Emergency Communications Center, and the Franklin County District Attorney's Office.
