NMDOT to invest $2.4 million in multiuse trail projects in Doña Ana County

The New Mexico Department of Transportation is set to invest $2.4 million of federal funding in four multiuse trail projects in Doña Ana County.

NMDOT announced Wednesday that 25 communities across the state will receive approximately $32.2 million in federal funding for 37 transportation and recreational trails projects.

Over the next four years, $41 million in federal, local and in-kind services will go to 37 transportation and recreational trails projects selected from 70 applicants across New Mexico, NMDOT said in a statement.

The City of Las Cruces will receive $999,873 in federal dollars for bicycle and pedestrian improvements and $505,873 for Las Cruces multiuse trails.

Las Cruces Public Schools will receive $92,042 in federal funding for its Safe Routes to School Program. The program is “a comprehensive approach to make school routes safe for children to walk and bicycle,” according to the Las Cruces Public Schools website.

Doña Ana County will receive $842,181 in federal funding for the Elks Drive Connectivity Project.

The Elks Drive Connectivity Project is a 1.15-mile-long multipurpose path from Columbia Elementary school all the way to Doña Ana Park, according to a 2018 meeting of the Technical Advisory Committee of the Mesilla Valley Metropolitan Planning Organization.
