Who is running for office in Otero County's election?

The municipal election season began Aug. 27 with candidate filing day.

Candidates had until 5 p.m. to declare candidacy in their respective municipal races.

This is the first year that municipal elections will not be held during the regular general election cycle, due to election law changes made in the 2018 Local Election Act.

Those races include city commission, school board, soil and water conservation district board and other races that under previous election law would have been voted on during the regular general or midterm election years.

There were several seats where no one filed for candidacy, these include the Alamogordo School Board District 5 seat and the Peñasco Soil and Water Conservation District. 

Filing day for write-in candidates is Sept. 3.

Absentee voting begins Oct. 8 at the Otero County Clerk's sub-office in the County Administration Building.

Early voting begins Oct. 19 at the Otero County Fairgrounds.
