Three dead in crash west of Sioux Falls

An emergency vehicle responds to a Saturday crash near 265th Street and 466th Avenue.

Three people died and two others were injured in a two-vehicle crash west of Sioux Falls on Saturday afternoon, the Highway Patrol said.

The names of the victims have not been released.

The Highway Patrol said a 2005 Pontiac Vibe was eastbound on South Dakota Highway 42 just before 1 p.m. when it crossed the center line and collided with a westbound 1994 Ford F150 pickup. The pickup caught fire shortly after the collision.

Both the driver and the passenger of the pickup died at the scene of the crash. The driver was a 57-year-old man and the passenger was a 44-year-old man. Seatbelt use is under investigation, the Highway Patrol said.

The driver of the Pontiac, a 39-year-old woman, died at the scene. Two boys who were passengers in the car, ages 10 and 5, were transported to a Sioux Falls hospital with serious non-life threatening injuries. All three were wearing seatbelts, according to the Highway Patrol.

Highway 42 near the crash scene was closed following the incident.
