NBB’s Rehagen says Trump should support biodiesel, soybean growers
The CEO of the National Biodiesel Board says he wants President Trump to
return the support he’s gotten from farmers. Donnell Rehagen tells Brownfield the
President has relied on soybean growers to be his allies in the trade war with
China. Rehagen says that’s why his organization and the American Soybean Association
jointly requested a meeting to discuss small refinery exemptions.
“Mr. President, would you please sit down and let us tell you exactly why this
issue pertaining to the RFS and these small refinery exemptions are important
to us,” Rehagen told Brownfield Ag News Thursday.
The administration can correct the exemptions by increasing Renewable Volume Obligations
that come out in the fall, said Rehagen.
“So they have an opportunity to recognize ‘we just granted these exemptions
over here to these small refiners; we should take that volume and put it back,’”
said Rehagen, “put it back into next year’s demand through this RFS.”
Analysis by University of Illinois economist Scott Irwin says damage to the
U.S. biodiesel industry from small refinery exemptions could reach $7.7 billion
or more than 2.5 billion gallons.
