A fire that broke out at a scrap metal company on Milwaukee’s south side Thursday afternoon was quickly brought under control, according to fire officials.

Multiple cars caught fire about 3 p.m. at Miller Compressing Co., 1900 W. Bruce St., said Deputy Chief Mike Blackwood of the Milwaukee Fire Department.

The company compresses metal junk, including cars. The fire was extinguished and employees were cleaning up as of 3:30 p.m., Blackwood said.

Plumes of black smoke were seen billowing from the building from TV news tower cameras before the fire was put out.

No one was injured and the workers at the scene evacuated. It was immediately unclear how the fire started.

West Reynolds Place, the road in front of the company, is closed to traffic.
