From JFK to Obama and Trump, here are some memorable presidential visits to New Mexico

President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama and their two daughters toured Carlsbad Caverns National Park Friday afternoon during a brief stop at the park in celebration of the Centennial Anniversary of the National Park Service.

Vice President Mike Pence is making a third visit to New Mexico on Wednesday.

In 2016, the VP stumped across the state with stops in Roswell and Las Cruces

The Republican presidential campaign rounded out visits to the Land of Enchantment with rallies held in Albuquerque.

In May that year, then-presidential candidate Donald Trump stopped in Albuquerque, where he spoke to a crowd at the Albuquerque Convention Center. Reports at the time indicated there was some violence at the event as protesters and rallygoers clashed.

Again, in October of that year, Trump flew into the Albuquerque Sunport where he gave a 1-hour speech in a last-minute campaign rally.

New Mexico has been known to play host from time to time to U.S. leadership. 

Here are a few of the most noteworthy:

Obama celebrates National Park's birthday

In June 2016, President Barack Obama was joined by the first family in visiting Carlsbad Caverns National Park in Southeast New Mexico.

The visit was in part to celebrate the centennial of the National Park Service.

In March 2012, Obama stopped in Maljimar, New Mexico, a small community in the southeast corner of the state, where he spoke about access to public lands for the extraction of natural resources.

Obama famously stopped at Barela's coffee house in Albuquerque in 2010 for a cup of coffee.

Michelle Obama returned to New Mexico in May 2016 to make the commencement speech at the Santa Fe Indian School. She visited first in 2012 when she traveled to Albuquerque and Kirtland Air Force Base. 

George W. Bush has the record

President George W. Bush traveled to the Land of Enchantment a total of six times during his years in the presidency.

He made stops in Hobbs, Alamogordo and Albuquerque — all during campaign years.

He also made a stop at Kirkland Air Force Base in 2007.

His Vice President Dick Cheney had just as many visits to the state.

Past presidential visits

A copy of John F. Kennedy's remarks while visiting New Mexico in 1962.

President John F. Kennedy visited Santa Fe in December 1962. 

According to the John F. Kennedy archives, the president spoke on the importance of the scientific research produced in the region.

In October 1916, President Theodore Roosevelt stopped in Albuquerque to campaign for his for fellow Republican Charles Hughes. The president traveled via train, where he was met by thousands of members of the public.
