Illinois wheat growers see wide yield variation

Illinois Wheat Association Executive Director Mike Doherty tells Brownfield one of the biggest concerns for wheat growers this year is yield variation.

“It’s all over the board. We have had some say they did well, they had pretty high yields and they haven’t had problems. In fact, some have had better yields than they normally have. We have others who said this was a terrible year. So, probably more variation on yield this year than we would normally see.”

Doherty says the excessive rain earlier in the year and high humidity has also increased insect and disease pressure in his area.

And when it comes to markets he says, “Prices have not been as high as we would like for them to be.”

Brownfield interviewed Doherty at the Illinois Wheat Association’s Summer Forum in Okawville.
