Canada provides trade aid to dairy farmers

Canadian dairy farmers will soon receive support from their government to make up for lost income from trade deals with Europe and the Pacific Rim.

Ag Minister Marie-Claude Bibeau says dairy farmers will receive $1.75 billion (Canadian) over the next eight years, with $345 million to be given this year.

“The owner of a typical farm with 80 dairy cows will be awarded compensation in the form of a direct payment of about $28,000 this year.”  

The Ag Minister also says farmers will fully and fairly be supported once the U.S. Mexico Canada trade agreement is ratified and the government will not give any more dairy concessions in upcoming trade negotiations.

A separate compensation program is expected for the country’s egg and poultry farmers impacted by trade deals.
