World Energy blames RFS waivers for closure of 3 biodiesel plants

One of the largest biofuel suppliers in the country blames small refinery waivers for the recent closing of three of its plants.

World Energy says with the latest EPA exemptions granted August 9th, it has ceased biodiesel production and furloughed employees at facilities in Georgia, Mississippi and Pennsylvania.

The company says it will maintain essential staffing at all three locations to stay in what it calls a “warm shutdown mode” pending improved market conditions.

Dave Ladd, who represents an ethanol plant in southeast Minnesota, tells Brownfield the industry is facing multiple headwinds.

“And as we all know, there’s a lot going on with our Chinese trading partners at this time, so that’s one headwind. But then we have these small refinery exemptions.”

He says the waivers have caused demand destruction, which has added on to other uncertainties that are negatively impacting the renewable fuels sector.
