Wertish critical of Trump’s “go it alone approach” to trade

The president of the Minnesota Farmers Union remains critical of what he calls President Trump’s “go it alone approach” to trade.

Gary Wertish tells Brownfield the President was right to call out China for its unfair trade practices, but says Trump made a mistake by not asking other countries to come alongside the U.S.

“Our President is using his bully pulpit, but China has a bigger bully pulpit. They don’t have elections every two years to drive their policy. China doesn’t democratically elect their president (so) it’s a huge difference. They’re a communist country and aren’t going to be changing.”

Wertish fears the Chinese government is content to ride out the trade war to see if Trump loses the presidency in 2020.

“It goes back to I don’t think they have a Plan B. And as a farmer, I’m concerned about future generations. How many generations are we removing from the farm now? We already know of families farming with their children, and (their children) got out.”

He says Trump’s trade policies are having a disastrous effect on rural America.
