Arkansas crops: 59% rice and 86% cotton called good to excellent

Summer weather continues to push Arkansas crop progress. 

According to the latest report from the USDA, 59 percent of the rice crop is rated good to excellent, 23 percent of the rice crop was mature and 84 percent of the crop is headed.  Soybeans are rated 56 percent good to excellent and 11 percent of the crop is turning color, 85 percent setting pods, and 95 percent blooming.  Cotton is rated 86 percent good to excellent, 7 percent is opening bolls.  Corn is rated 59 percent good to excellent, 4 percent is harvested, 44 percent mature, and 87 percent is in the dent stage.  Ninety-one percent of the peanut crop is rated good to excellent and 51 percent of sorghum is rated good to excellent.

Topsoil moisture is 55 percent adequate to surplus and 61 percent of the subsoil moisture is adequate to surplus. 

A Pike County cattle producer says the hot and dry conditions are starting to take their toll on area cattlemen and hay fields are desperately in need of rain.
