Tennessee crops: 74% soybeans and 65% cotton called good to excellent

Hot and dry weather advanced crop progress across much of Tennessee last week.

According to the USDA’s latest weekly crop report, 74 percent of the soybean crop is rated good to excellent with 90 percent of the crop blooming and 73 percent setting pods.  Sixty-five percent of the cotton crop is rated good to excellent; 94 percent is setting bolls and 4 percent of the bolls are opening.  Eighty-four percent of the corn crop is rated good to excellent; 4 percent of the crop is maturing, 62 percent is dented and 93 percent is in the dough stage.

Despite the heat, pastures and cattle look good for this time of year.  Topsoil moisture is rated 69 percent adequate to surplus and 72 percent of subsoil moisture is adequate to surplus.
