Man convicted of rape dies in South Dakota prison

Charles Clinton Dammann, 65, died in prison after serving five years in the South Dakota State Penitentiary.

Officials say an inmate at the South Dakota State Penitentiary has died after being placed in a comfort care setting at the prison.

Charles Clinton Dammann, 65, died Sunday, the South Dakota Department of Corrections said in a statement. Officials did not specify why Dammann was in comfort care at the time of his death.

Dammann had been in prison since 2014 after being convicted of raping a 6-year-old girl in Codington County, according to the South Dakota Sex Offender Registry.
