Iowa’s senators react to report that Trump approved waivers

A report that President Trump personally signed off on the EPA’s latest round of RFS waivers has raised the ire of Iowa’s two U.S. Senators.

“I’m very disappointed,” Senator Joni Ernst told reporters over the weekend. “Our farmers are angry.”

Senator Chuck Grassley also expressed his disappointment. Grassley says the waivers were intended for small refineries but are now being granted to the likes of Exxon and Chevron.

“What’s really bad isn’t a waiver—it’s that it’s being granted to people that really aren’t hardship,” Grassley said on Iowa Public Television’s Iowa Press program.

Ernst says the ethanol waivers are hurting Trump’s popularity with farmers.

“It is very damaging to him,” Ernst said.

National Farmers Union president accused Trump of talking out of both sides of his mouth. In Johnson’s words, “He may say he loves farmers, but his actions say otherwise.”
