Illinois Farm Bureau talks USMCA with Pelosi

Bringing the USMCA up for a vote was the main focus of a meeting between Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Illinois Farm Bureau representatives in Springfield Wednesday.

IFB President Richard Guebert tells Brownfield Pelosi made no commitment to call the bill after the August recess but he is encouraged by her desire to get it passed by the end of the year.

“I encouraged her, as soon as the August recess is over, that she should call the bill and that we could get overwhelming bipartisan support for the USMCA like we did for the farm bill almost a year ago.”

Guebert says Pelosi made no commitment to call the bill after the August recess but he was encouraged by her desire to get it passed by the end of the year.

“We talked about the political climate and that we need to do it yet this year because once the first of the year come around everyone’s attention is going to be focusing on the November election.”

Guebert says he told Pelosi after a challenging planting season, farmers need more trade certainty not only with Canada and Mexico, but also China, Japan and the EU.

Pelosi was in Springfield as the keynote speaker at the Illinois Democratic County Chairs’ Association Brunch which coincided with Democrat Day at the Illinois State Fair.
