EPA announces $3.15 million in water quality funding in Iowa
The EPA is providing over three million dollars in Farmer to Farmer grants to three Iowa-based projects that are working to improve water quality, habitat, and environmental education.
Practical Farmers of Iowa was awarded 936-thousand dollars for its project entitled “Roots for Water Quality: A Farmer-to-Farmer Model for a Sustainable Mississippi Basin”. The University of Iowa received a million dollars for “Connecting Rural and Peri-urban Farmers to Demonstrate and Disseminate Innovative Nutrient and Sediment Reduction Practices”. And the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship was granted 1.1 million dollars for “Effective, Targeted Wetland Installations to Maximize Nutrient Removal, Wetland Habitat Function, and Ultimately Expand Delivery”.
EPA says the purpose of the grants is to “promote innovative, market-based solutions for monitoring and improving water quality throughout the Gulf of Mexico watershed”.
