Minnesota soybean development catching up

A respite from rain helped dry hay and speed up small grain harvest in Minnesota last week.

The USDA says there were more than five days suitable for fieldwork, which also allowed crop development to continue at a steady pace.

As of Sunday, 83 percent of Minnesota corn has silked.  That’s 10 days behind last year and nearly a week slower than the five-year average.

The condition rating for corn is 57 percent good to excellent.

Soybeans blooming reached 90 percent, four days behind last year and just three days off the normal pace.

Sixty-one percent of the Minnesota soybean crop is rated good to excellent.

With a few reports of early harvest, the spring wheat crop is rated 84 percent good to excellent.

The oat harvest is 12 percent complete, and four percent of barley has been harvested.

The second cutting of alfalfa is 88 percent finished, three days behind normal.
