Adams County firefighter seriously injured after being ejected from fire engine

A firefighter was seriously injured Friday night while responding to a crash in Menallen Township, Adams County. 

A member of Buchanan Valley Volunteer Fire Department, the firefighter was ejected from a fire engine, the fire department said in a news release. Fire company president, Timothy Baldwin, later identified the firefighter as Walter Wagaman, Orrtanna. 

A Pennsylvania State Police spokesperson said Wagaman fell from the truck, when asked to confirm that he had been thrown from the vehicle.

Emergency personnel on site treated the firefighter, and he was ultimately flown to York trauma center with severe injuries, the fire department said.

The incident happened while five members of the department were assisting Bendersville Community Fire Company at the site of a vehicle crash in the 3600 block off Carlisle Pike. The company was alerted to the crash at 9:16 p.m. 

"We ask that you keep the Buchanan Valley Volunteer Fire Department and the injured member in your thoughts and prayers," Baldwin and Fire Chief Michael Spielman said in the news release. "Additionally, we ask that you respect the injured member and his family and his family and refrain from starting and/or spreading rumors or false information on social media."

Speaking to Public Opinion, Baldwin declined to share any other information about the incident, citing the open investigation.
