Cover PP acre soils
Michigan State University Extension experts say farmers who haven’t planted prevent plant acres yet should follow cover crop recommendations for after wheat.
Sustainable ag educator Dean Baas says there is a need for more forages in Michigan which is why they’ve set general guidelines for this year.
“The goal here is to produce good forage and we didn’t want to put a bunch of restrictions around farmers while they tried to do that—we are in a forage shortage situation.”
Corn and soybeans are recognized as cover crops on prevented plant acres in Michigan. Baas says 28 to 40,000 seeds per acre are recommended for corn and at least 150,000 for soybeans, both with 30-inch rows or less.
Because of forage shortages, RMA has moved up the harvest date of cover crops on prevent plant acres after September 1st of this year only.
