Wyffels reps take on role of counselor during challenging spring

A regional manager for Wyffels Hybrids says there came a point during planting when many of his seed reps took on the role of counselor. 

Wade Anderson, who covers southwest Minnesota and southeast South Dakota, says farmers in his area remained optimistic about the 2019 growing season until the middle of May.

“But then when we got those two and three inch rains, the optimism went away in a hurry. And you really kind of switch into counselor mode, and like I told my district sales managers and our seed reps, our job is just simply to produce facts.”

Speaking to Brownfield at the Wyffels Corn Strategies event in Worthington, Minnesota Tuesday, he says growers mulled over switching maturities or taking prevented planting.

“I’ll never forget, we had the one day this spring (when) I sent a text message to my district sales managers and (said) ‘If this is too much, go home. You’re not doing anybody any good, with the wide swing of emotions, you’ve got to stay positive for these guys.”

Anderson says Wyffels swapped out a lot of hybrids in late spring, bringing earlier maturing products north and moving later season corn south.
