Could challenging 2019 end with early freeze?

Farmers are concerned a growing season full of challenges could culminate with an early frost.

Brent Tharp with Wyffels Hybrids says late planted corn is trying to catch up, and probably needs an extended fall.

“I still think if we stay on this Growing Degree track that we’re on, we’ll finish it with a normal frost. We’d like to see a later frost. I believe we’ll finish that June planted crop if we stay on the current trajectory.”

But, if there’s a killing freeze earlier than normal.

“It would be devastating across the Corn Belt because we have a lot of June planted corn.”

Brownfield spoke to Tharp during the Wyffels Corn Strategies event in Worthington, Minnesota Tuesday.
