Shots fired in West Manheim Township lead to arrest warrant for a Florida man

A 76-year-old Florida man has a warrant issued for his arrest after police say he shot at two of his family members over disputes about a deceased family member's will.

Donald Melvin Laughman, of Pasco, Florida, allegedly shot three bullets at Scott Sanders and Jennifer Sanders in West Manheim Township on July 21, according to an affidavit filed with District Judge Jeffrey Sneeringer.

At about 7 p.m., Jennifer Sanders called 911 to report the shooting in the first block of Hillcrest Drive, stating that Laughman had shot at Scott Sanders with a firearm and then fled in a red Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck with a Florida license plate.

When police arrived, both Scott and Jennifer Sanders said they were not struck by any of the bullets, but police saw two bullet holes in the windshield of a Jeep Cherokee parked in the driveway, the affidavit states.

Scott Sanders said that he was hiding directly behind the Jeep when Laughman fired two shots at him.

The Sanders identified Laughman as a disgruntled family member from Florida, who they had been in disputes with about civil actions from a deceased family member's will, police said in the affidavit.

They both said they believed that their lives were in danger and Scott Sanders told police he believed Laughman was trying to kill him.

Scott Sanders also said that when Laughman initially tried to shoot him he thought the firearm misfired and that's when Scott Sanders ran behind the Jeep, the affidavit states.

Surveillance footage from the garage shows a Silverado pull into the driveway and the driver, reportedly Laughman, speak with Scott Sanders for several minutes.

It also shows Laughman pull out a firearm, stick it out his driver side window, fire shots at Scott Sander and then flee the area, police said in the affidavit.

Police did a criminal history check on Laughman, which showed he is a convicted felon and unauthorized to be in possession of a firearm.

Laughman currently has a warrant out for his arrest and awaiting a preliminary hearing.

He is charged with criminal attempt of criminal homicide, possession of a prohibited firearm, aggravated assault and recklessly endangering another person, according to online court documents.
