DEWITT TOWNSHIP – One person died in a three-vehicle crash Friday night that involved a Michigan State Police trooper.

A state trooper was responding to a call Friday night around 8 p.m. when his vehicle collided with a semi truck near the intersection of Old U.S. 127 and Cutler Road in DeWitt Township. The semi hit a third vehicle, and the driver of that vehicle died, according to police.

The trooper involved in the crash had minor injuries, police said, and the truck driver was not injured.

The Michigan State Police 3rd District, which is based in Flint, will handle the investigation into the crash.

State Police Lt. Darren Green said an accident reconstruction team will review the crash and investigators will review at any available video, talk to witnesses and look at in-car technology to find out what happened Friday night.

"It should give us a very accurate picture as to what happened," he said.

The trooper was en route to a retail fraud call at the Meijer store in DeWitt, travelling westbound on Cutler Road, when he collided with the semi, according to Green.

The third vehicle was possibly travelling southbound on Old U.S. 127 when it collided with the semi, Green said.

The area around the crash was closed Friday night, Green said, and would remain closed until investigators cleared the scene.
