U.S. China trade war likely to last longer

There are new signs the U.S.-China trade war might not end anytime soon.  Chinese state media People’s Daily says Commerce Minister Zhong Shan has joined the negotiation team.  Zhong Shan told the communist party paper the U.S. started the economic and trade dispute in violation of the principles of the World Trade Organization, and China must stand firm in defending its interests.

U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer told reporters more telephone discussions with China are happening this week and he might travel to Beijing if the phone calls are productive.

President Trump says there’s a long way to go to reach a deal and he might still impose tariffs on another 325-billion dollars’ worth of Chinese goods if negotiations break down.  Trump tweeted Monday China wants a deal as companies seek to leave China.  China’s 2nd quarter growth was the slowest in 27 years.
