Maryland State Police said no one was injured when an airplane crash landed into the shallow water just off the beach Tuesday evening.

Maryland State Police say the pilot was Trevor Deihl, 23 of Reedville, Virginia. Deihl was planning to land at the Ocean City Airport, police said.

"He said he was about one mile off shore when he began having engine trouble and ultimately glided the plane into the ocean," according to the release.

Deihl glided his 1981 Cessna 172 RG down to the water and crashed about one quarter mile from the shoreline, police said. Witnesses at the scene reported to Maryland State Police that the plane crashed and then floated to the beach.

Witnesses said Deihl was able to exit his plane and come onto shore.

"Personnel from the Ocean City Beach Patrol and the Ocean City Police Department immediately responded to the scene," according to Maryland State Police.

Along with Maryland State Police, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Maryland Natural Resources Police, U.S. Coast Guard, National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration have also been notified about the crash.

Ashley Miller, deputy communications manager for the Ocean City Police Department, confirmed the incident earlier Tuesday and said the plane crashed into the beach near 21st Street. There was one occupant in the aircraft and they are being evaluated by emergency medical personnel.

OCPD later tweeted that the "small" plane was attempting to make "emergency landing into shallow waters of the ocean."

The single occupant of the plane was checked out by paramedics at the scene and released, police said.

Miller said the Maryland State Police were handling the incident. However, OCPD tweeted that preliminary investigating has revealed that the plane may have experienced mechanical difficulties while in flight.

Live cameras along the Ocean City Boardwalk still show emergency responders on the scene as of 7:45 p.m. Large groups of onlookers are gathering behind police tape on the north and south ends of the accident scene.

As beachgoers walk down the boardwalk an ambulance and another emergency vehicle are partially blocking the boardwalk. In the immediate aftermath of the crash, boardwalk cameras show an emergency response boat was also on the scene of the plane crash.

Maryland State Police say an investigation is ongoing.
