Spartan Michigan dairy plant right on track

A spokesperson for Dairy Farmers of America says one the largest dairy processing projects under construction in the U.S. is right on track to start accepting milk next fall.

Director of Operations and Business Development Scott Corrin tells Brownfield the facility will be able to process eight million pounds of milk per day which DFA members will supply about 75 percent of and Select Milk Producers will supply the remainder.

“It’s equivalent to almost a quarter of the milk totally produced in the state of Michigan.”

Once the plant is open, Corrin says Michigan farmers will see immediate savings from reduced transportation costs and it should open processing capacity in other regions.

“There’s a lot of processors in Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York that could have an opportunity for additional milk.”

Corrin says the St. John’s plant could increase capacity up to 15 million pounds per day which also opens the door for future expansion.
