Optimism remains for soybean crop

A soybean expert says farmers are now at the mercy of Mother Nature for this year’s crop.

Mark Seamon with the Michigan Soybean Promotion Committee says he’s optimistic about this year’s soybean crop despite the delayed start, but….

“We do know that expectations for this year’s crop will be less than what we’ve experienced in the past.”

He says this year’s pod fill will be even more critical.

“That time period of flowering and filling pods will be a little bit compressed compared to other years so we’re really relying on good conditions to get some growth now and then good conditions as we’re flowering and filling pods later in the season.”

Seamon expects crop insurance and the Market Facilitation Program to help farmers through economic struggles this year.
