Biosecurity efforts continue over ASF concerns

The swine health director at the Indiana Board of Animal Health says producers in Indiana are ramping up biosecurity efforts by participating in Securing Indiana’s Pork Supply plan.

Dr. Kelli Werling says this is especially critical as additional cases of African Swine Fever are identified internationally.

“Being able to have these preparedness steps done, or initiated at least, right now during what we call peace time can set us up to be in a better position when it comes to an actual disease response,” she says.

Indiana BOAH integrated the national plan into Indiana’s disease response framework and created the Securing Indiana’s Pork Supply plan.

Werling says participating producers complete five steps…

“These five things are premises ID validation, biosecurity assessment and training, certified sampler training, electronic movement permit training, and then also attending a Securing Indiana’s Pork Supply meeting with staff at the board of animal health,” she says.

The next ASF meeting is in September. The four-day event will include policy issues, planning issues, and a drill about what an outbreak would look like.
