Weeds more of a problem in no-till systems

A crop protection specialist with BASF says controlling weeds has been especially hard for no-till farmers.

AJ Woodyard tells Brownfield in some parts of the country wet conditions have been problematic for almost a year.

“There were a lot of fields that got woolly in a hurry, and part of that was just because we couldn’t even get fall spraying done.”

He says no-till farmers have had to adjust in order to get big weeds burned down.

“For the most part, guys were able to make those adjustments. I had some pretty major concerns about whether it was a grower or retail applicators being able to get over the acres if the planters got rolling fast enough. And there are some of those scenarios out there.”

But Woodyard points out later planted soybeans grow faster, which he says narrows the gap from post-herbicide application to canopy closure.
