Pendulum now swings to too dry in Michigan

Hot weather helped push growing degree days along in Michigan last week and also added to crop stress.

The USDA says the state’s corn crop condition remained steady at 46 percent good to excellent.

Soybeans are 95 percent emerged, nine percent blooming and 44 percent good to excellent.

The wheat crop is now 44 percent mature, two percent harvested and 44percent good to excellent.

Dry beans are 95 percent planted, 69 percent emerged, and rated 64 percent good to excellent.  Sugarbeet condition declined four points to 60 percent good to excellent. The first cutting of alfalfa is 89 percent complete, second cutting at 19 percent.

Hops are in bloom in the southwest and progressing nicely while celery and cole crop harvest is ongoing.  Hot, dry weather is pushing along fruit development and increasing pest pressures.  Some tart cherry and blueberry harvest is underway.
