Senator Young discusses planting season, ag issues with Hoosier farmers

Indiana Senator Todd Young met with farmers and industry leaders Friday to discuss ag policy issues.

West Central Indiana Farmer Brent Bible says it allowed farmers to discuss how the 2019 planting season is impacting their operations.

“We weren’t able to lay a good foundation with our planting season so no matter what kind of weather we have from here on out we’re faced with the fact that we’re not going to produce an ideal crop,” he says.

The shop talk was hosted by the Indiana Corn Growers Association and the Indiana Soybean Alliance on Bible’s farm in Romney, Indiana.

He tells Brownfield they also discussed the importance of urging Congress to ratify the U.S. Mexico Canada Agreement.

“There was a lot of support and encouragement for the senator to do what he can to champion the passage of USMCA,” he says. “I believe we’re starting to see a little bit of momentum in that space and hopefully we can see a passage of USMCA fairly soon.”

Other topics included the market facilitation program and conservation.

Bible says it’s important for elected officials like Young to visit farms to see first-hand the challenges farmers are facing. He says it allows farmers to tell their stories and discuss how policies are impacting their operations.
