JD Scott, brother of HGTV stars Jonathan and Drew Scott, is opening up about health challenges that he's been plagued with for more than a year.

Scott has been featured on "Brother vs. Brother" and "Property Brothers at Home."

Sitting beside fiancée Annalee Belle, in a video shared to his Instagram account, Scott revealed he has been "quite sick" for what he estimates is 13-14 months, beginning around last May, when he says he was hospitalized.

"That event there was so bad that I thought I was dying, actually," he said. "It was really bad, and I was preparing all my estate, and I was writing out passwords for (Belle)."

Experts at the hospital wanted to send Scott for MRIs.

Among his symptoms, Scott said he had a severe reaction to temperatures higher than 69-70 degrees. "I would suddenly feel like my skin is on fire," he said. "I would start passing out, and I'd be out of commission for, sometimes, days."

Scott said it was thought the cause of his struggles was lupus, then two brain aneurysms.

His months-long, mysterious medical challenge took their toll. "There (were) a few times where I was pretty sure I was dying," he said before getting emotional.

One neurologist diagnosed him with a nummular headache and prescribed medication that helped with a "crawly" feeling in his head. Another doctor, Scott Jacobson, who also practices functional medicine, diagnosed Scott with "a pretty severe infection," Scott said, which may have been causing his symptoms.

Scott says he believes, due to the infection, his "antibodies were kind of attacking all over the place, kind of like it is with autoimmune..."

After a round of antibiotics and cutting out wheat, dairy, soy, gluten and sugar from his diet about a month ago, Scott says his condition has improved.

"I can, without a doubt, say that I think maybe about four or five days after I started all that, I started to feel a little bit better, and it's gotten progressively better and better," he said.

"I felt at times recently, like I did before this all started, over a year ago. To me that's huge progress, I haven't felt like that in ages," he added. "I've been able to do things. I've been able to go outside sometimes.

"It's not all better by any stretch," he advised. "I don't want you think, like, 'He's cured!' but this sort of thing does take time."
