CLARENCE TWP. - A 52-year-old Olivet man died Sunday in a single-car crash in Clarence Township.

Calhoun County Sheriff Department deputies said the crash was reported at 5:03 p.m. on 28-Mile Road and M Drive North.

Residents reported hearing squealing tires and a crash and then finding the vehicle had hit a tree.

When firefighters from the Springport/Clarence Township Fire Department arrived they found that the Olivet man, a passenger in the vehicle, had died. The driver, a 37-year-old Olivet man, was taken to Henry Ford Allegiance Hospital in Jackson for treatment.

Deputies said the vehicle was southbound on 28-Mile Road and left the roadway on a curve. When the driver attempted to regain control the vehicle crossed the road and hit a tree.

The department's Accident Reconstruction Team is investigating. Deputies believe alcohol and speed are factors in the crash.
