Art project on I-205 pedestrian bridge tied up in red tape

Amy Hoffman wanted transform the gray colored footbridge into something the neighborhood would be proud of. But bureaucracy may be in the way.

PORTLAND, Ore. — The Southeast Steele Street footbridge has a new look. The bridge crosses over Interstate 205 in the Lents neighborhood.

Amy Hoffman wanted transform the gray colored footbridge into something the neighborhood would be proud of.

She found out she needed a permit and started the process three years ago. Unable to work through the ODOT bureaucracy, she decided to go ahead and paint the bridge.

With the help of volunteers they painted the bridge in June.

“I want this for the children so they have a sense of worth and pride in their community," she said.

ODOT said without a permit the bridge needs to be repainted it’s original gray color. They have until July 31 to do that or get a permit.

ODOT and Hoffman are working on a resolution.
