Missouri label lawsuit talks fizzle

A report in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch says attempts to settle the lawsuit over Missouri’s new labeling law for fake meat reportedly have failed.

The lawsuit, filed by Oregon-based Tofurky and the American Civil Liberties Union, alleges Missouri officials would be violating the free speech rights of plant-based meat makers if the law were enforced.

Last year, the Missouri legislature passed a bill saying products cannot be marketed as meat unless they are derived from an actual cow, chicken, turkey or other animals with two or four feet.  Supporters say of the law, which was to go into effect last August, say it will protect Missouri livestock and poultry producers.
